Serious risks

• Timing chain stretch (early versions): Early CCWA engines (2004-2010) had chain stretch at rear of V. Later versions improved.
• Intake manifold swirl flaps: Intake manifold flaps can stick or break — loss of power.
• EGR system issues: Complex EGR system — cooler and valve can fail.
• AdBlue/NOx sensor faults: SCR/NOx sensors can fail, triggering warnings and limp mode.
• Car is 20 years old — expect age-related wear: rubber seals, bushings, water pump, AC compressor
• Very high mileage (267,801 km) — expect suspension, drivetrain, and turbo wear. Thorough pre-purchase inspection essential.

Additional notes

• Pre-2010 diesel with 250k+ km: injectors, turbo, EGR all at end of life. DPF regeneration failures cause cascading damage. Total repair bill can easily exceed car value. Budget €2,000-5,000 for major overhaul. Consider whether the car is worth investing in.
• Vehicle is 15+ years old. Age-related issues: rubber seals/hoses degrade, electrical connectors corrode, suspension bushings wear. Not specific to any engine, but expect €500-1,500/year in age-related maintenance beyond normal service items.
• CAUTION: Early Audi 3.0 TDI V6 (2004-2012) has the timing chain at the rear, between engine and gearbox. Chain stretch is common after 120k km and replacement requires engine removal — €3,000-6,000. Listen for rattling on cold start. Later versions (2012+) improved but still monitor carefully. This is the diesel equivalent of the BMW N47 chain problem.
• Any car with 200k+ km requires extra scrutiny. At this mileage: suspension components are worn (bushings, ball joints, shocks), seals and gaskets are hardened, electrical connectors corrode, and major components approach end-of-life. For luxury cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) the cost of 200k+ km maintenance can exceed the car's value. Always get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) and budget 15-25% of purchase price for immediate maintenance.
